What is the Metal Content of Modern Quarters?
Have you ever wondered about the quarters we use today and how much they are worth as far as the metal content is concerned? Some people think we still use silver quarters when in fact for decades American quarters have been made from a mixture of zinc and copper that isn’t worth much at all at least compared to the face value of the coin.
Nickels and pennies are a slightly different story since they are smaller and the value of the metals they are made of has caught up and even passed the face value of the coins. What this means is that if you melted down a bunch of pennies and sold the block of metal you could get more for that block than the collective value of each cent that went into making the block.
Another way of looking at it is that it costs the United States Mint more than a penny or more than five cents to produce the one and five cent coins we use on a daily basis.
